By the time I walked back into the club, Lillian’s friend and the rest of the patrons were gone. I handed the aluminum bat to Viktor and instructed him to clean it thoroughly with bleach. Then, I ran up the stairs and opened my office door to find Lillian lying on my black, overstuffed leather couch where Viktor had put her in the recovery position on her side. Her hair fell in wisps over her face, as she lay motionless except for the breaths expanding and contracting her ribcage. I knelt beside her and gingerly brushed her hair out of her face, tucking it behind her ear.
Suddenly, Lillian gagged without opening her eyes or so much as lifting her head. I took the trashcan from beside my desk and positioned it under her head as she unconsciously retched, vomiting down the front of her dress and onto the leather upholstery.
“Shit,” I whispered.
I moved her head to the edge of the couch, attempting to guide her to vomit into the trashcan. I managed to get her to puke into the trashcan, then wiped her mouth and chin with my handkerchief. It occurred to me that I should have been disgusted, but I felt sorry for her- and guilty as fuck. I’d failed her; Lillian had been practically right under my nose and that little Wall Street bitch was still able to get his hands on her.
I thought I heard somewhere that, if a girl pukes, you’re supposed to tie her hair back. Grabbing a rubber band from my desk, I gathered Lillian’s hair and secured it to the back of her head. Then, I called the valet and asked him to pull my Maserati to the front of the club. I delicately lifted Lillian and cradled her in my arms, my chest twisting as I looked down at her small, utterly defenseless form.
Carrying her out of the club, I buckled her into the passenger seat of my waiting Maserati and drove toward my place. On the way to my penthouse in the Upper East Side, Lillian’s head lulled and she vomited into her own lap. I felt like such a useless motherfucker, knowing I could have stopped this from happening to her had I just protected her better.
Once we reached my building, I removed her limp body from my car and held her as we took the elevator to my penthouse. Carrying her to my guest bedroom upstairs, I removed her dress and changed my own clothes before I arranged the pillows to keep Lillian’s head elevated. I watched her for a few minutes before I pulled the comforter under her chin and lit the dim bedside lamp. Flopping into the overstuffed armchair next to the bed, I fell asleep staring at Lillian’s profile as she slept.
